Interested in volunteering?

There are several ways to get involved in the Science Slam.

Please read about the volunteer opportunities below.

Email wwcscienceslam@gmail.com for more information.

LEADERS

Each exhibit and lab needs a volunteer to take ownership. Besides running a lab or exhibit, you'll make sure it gets prepared and set up.

It doesn't matter if you have an idea or not.  If you like science and working with kids, the Slam needs you! Sign up as a leader and we'll help connect you to an idea, brand-new or tried-and-true.

Exhibit leaders

Science Slam Exhibits are learning stations that give volunteers a close-up interaction with students, typically on a table with a canopy. Visitors just walk up and learn, no reservation required.

As an Exhibit Leader, you will:

  • Pull together the materials for your exhibit

  • Make sure it gets set up at the Slam

  • Educate visitors who stop by (the best part!)

You don't have to do it alone! We'll connect you with Assistants to help you.

Lab leaders

Labs are workshop-like experiences for students -- hands-on experiences in a classroom, guided by a Lab Leader and lasting for 45 minutes. Your students will sign up in advance for each time slot, enabling you to take several groups on a more in-depth journey into a particular topic.

As a Lab Leader, you will:

  • Pull together the materials for your lab

  • Plan your Lab (plenty of help available)

  • Organize any Assistants you've requested

  • Share the joy of discovery in a class-like setting

  • Receive all the support you need from Slam organizers

If you have the desire but not an idea, let us know! There are many ideas from previous Slams, plus lots of resources online.

ASSISTANTS

Q: Want to interact with students, but with only day-of-event responsibilities?

A: Be an Assistant! You can help set up and run exhibits or labs, getting all the fun with less time commitment. (Some Leaders may need help from Assistants prior to the day of the Science Slam event, if you're interested.)

Let us know you're interested and we'll be in touch.

GENERAL EVENT VOLUNTEERS

We need volunteers to support the services that make the science possible! In addition to set-up and clean-up, volunteers are needed during the event to greet volunteers and guests, run the snack bar, and generally facilitate the experience for the community.  If you have any ideas you'd like to share, we'd love to hear those too!

Let us know you're interested and we'll be in touch.
